<p><span style="font-family: times new roman,times;"><span style="font-size: small;">The work being done by Sector Baltimore and the AST is in its initial stages.</span></span></p>

<h3>STRIKE TEAM&nbsp;ASSISTS EPA IN<br />CONTAMINATED RIVER&nbsp;CLEANUP</h3>

</span><span style="font-family: times new roman,times;"><span style="font-size: small;">Two members of the Coast Guard's Atlantic Strike Team are&nbsp;working with&nbsp;the Environmental Protection Agency&nbsp;by collecting&nbsp;soil samples in&nbsp;contaminated portions of the Passaic River in Newark, N.J., Monday.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: times new roman,times;">The Strike Team members are monitoring air quality, ensuring safety standards are met and providing photographic documentation at the dredging sites.&nbsp;&nbsp;Soil sample collection&nbsp;at the site will continue until&nbsp;Saturday as the initial phases of the cleanup project begin.&nbsp; </span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: times new roman,times;">The sediments of the lower Passaic River, the longest river in New Jersey, are contaminated with a variety of hazardous substances including:&nbsp; dioxin, PCBs, mercury, DDT, pesticides and heavy metals.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: times new roman,times;">The Lower Passaic River Restoration Project is a partnership of federal and&nbsp;state agencies designed to clean up contaminated sediments, improve water quality, restore degraded shorelines,&nbsp;create new habitats and enhance&nbsp;public recreation along a 17-mile stretch of the&nbsp;river.&nbsp; The project also includes several tributaries from Dundee Dam near Garfield to Newark Bay.</span></span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: x-small;">Five members of the&nbsp;Coast Guard's Atlantic Strike Team are&nbsp;assisting Coast Guard Sector Baltimore&nbsp;in air monitoring&nbsp;in the Washington, D.C. area during the Presidential speech Tuesday.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: x-small;">The Fort Dix, N.J.-based team members are&nbsp;air monitoring for&nbsp;contaminants and radiation detection in various locations throughout the metropolitan area in case of a terrorist attack.&nbsp; The two-person survey teams will monitor&nbsp;atmospheric conditions for&nbsp;substances that may&nbsp;be adverse to the general population.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: x-small;">The&nbsp;AST,&nbsp;as well as&nbsp;the other two strike teams&nbsp;in the National Strike Force,&nbsp;have&nbsp;performed similar missions&nbsp;to&nbsp;enhance safety&nbsp;at&nbsp;nationally significant events&nbsp;such as&nbsp;the Presidential Inauguration, the&nbsp;Democratic and Republican National Conventions and major sporting events.</span></p>

Three members of the Coast Guard's Atlantic Strike Team are on scene to assist with the salvage of the US Airways plane that crashed in New York Thursday.</p>
<p>Two of the Fort Dix, N.J., based team members are working with Coast Guard Sector New York and contractors to develop a salvage plan and document the costs of the plane's recovery. Another member is leading a recovery team at the salvage site.</p>

Three&nbsp;members of the&nbsp;National Strike Force&nbsp;deployed&nbsp;Sunday to St. Louis&nbsp;where they are&nbsp;assisting&nbsp;local Coast Guard units&nbsp;with flood operations.

<font size="2">Four members of the Atlantic Strike Team deployed to assist&nbsp;Coast Guard Sector Southern New England&nbsp;in removing fuel from a fishing vessel that&nbsp;grounded Monday near Point Judith, R.I. </font>
</p>

<p>
<font size="2">Due to the extent of damage to Blue Sea, a 67-foot commercial fishing vessel, its 3,000 gallons of fuel onboard&nbsp;is considered&nbsp;a potential threat to&nbsp;Narragansett Bay and will be offloaded.&nbsp; Contractors with support from Coast Guard teams&nbsp;will attempt to transfer the fuel&nbsp;at a&nbsp;distance of 300 feet to a tanker truck onshore. </font>
</p>

<p>
<font size="2">The&nbsp;Fort Dix, N.J., based AST members are&nbsp;providing contractor oversight and command organizational support&nbsp;to the Sector.&nbsp; The members are also providing technical assistance onboard the Coast Guard Cutter Willow in pre-staging oil recovery equipment as a precautionary measure. </font>

Two members of the Atlantic Strike Team were deployed Tuesday to assist the Environmental Protection Agency at the scene of a train derailment in Middlebury, Vt. <br />

</p>

The train carried cars containing gasoline, and the New Jersey based strike team members are conducting health and safety oversight at the scene.

Seven&nbsp;members of the Atlantic Strike Team remain on scene today assisting the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency cleanup a cutaneous&nbsp;anthrax contaminated&nbsp;residence in Danbury, Conn.
