Two members of the Gulf Strike Team were dispatched Monday to assist the Environmental Protection Agency with removal of hazardous materials at Mobile American Bumper Plating in Mobile, Ala.

The strike team members are providing air monitoring, site safety and contractor oversight as removal activities are underway.

GULF STRIKE TEAM RESPONDS
TO STORAGE FACILITY LEAK

Three members of the Gulf Strike Team are assisting members of Coast Guard Sector New Orleans today in removing oil and other hazardous materials from storage facilities owned by Cedyco Corporation in Jefferson Parrish, La.

The three separate storage facilities in Bayou Dupont, Bayou St. Dennis and Mud Lake are considered to be in poor condition and leaking oil.  The Mobile, Ala., based GST members, Sector New Orleans and contractors are developing an incident action plan to lighter oil into barges.

The GST members are also providing site safety, cost documentation and monitoring evidence collection.

Two members of the Gulf Strike Team are working today with the Environmental Protection Agency in providing federal oversight, documentation and site safety at a former wood treating facility in Winchester, Ky.

The GST members deployed Monday to assist the EPA with cleanup operations that began in 2007.  The work includes securing the site, cleaning debris, arranging for the offsite disposal of wood treating chemicals and a comprehensive sampling investigation to determine if soil removal or capping would be required. Subsequent cleanup operations at the site are expected to continue through June 2008.

 Three members of the Coast Guard Gulf Strike Team provided technical assistance Thursday in the aftermath of a ship fire in Mobile, Ala.

A 200-foot ship caught fire Wednesday in the Mobile River at the Bender Shipbuilding and Repair Company. It was extinguished by local firefighters Thursday afternoon.

The Mobile-based GST members monitored the safe offload of the water used to fight the fire.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the incident.

Four members of the Gulf Strike Team deployed today to assist with removing oil from a barge that grounded Wednesday near St. Petersburg, Fla.

The 138-foot tugboat Yankee was transporting 500,000 gallons of oil in a barge when it hit a sand bar three miles west of Egmont Key, Fla. It was traveling from Houston to Tampa, Fla.

The Mobile, Ala., based GST members are providing command organizational support to Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg.

Two members of the Gulf Strike Team deployed today to assist with the transfer of fluorosilic acid to a secure containment area near Braithwaite, La.

The GST members, from Mobile, Ala., are working with Coast Guard Sector New Orleans to develop a plan for the transfer of approximately 500,000 gallons of the highly toxic acid.  They will also conduct air monitoring during the neutralization process at the Stolthaven Facility in Braithwaite.
